Dutch glass design and classic cars at spring Collectors Fair

On 14th and 15th April tens of thousands of visitors from Holland and abroad will gather again at Europe's biggest fair for collectors: the International Collectors Fair at the Jaarbeurs Utrecht, The Netherlands. This biannual event, as always held in conjunction with the Mega Record & CD Fair, is the best opportunity for collectors to exhibit their collection or to complete it with new acquisitions. More than 1.500 exhibitors from all over the world offer every possible collectable item, ranging from toys, books, militaria, glass and crockery to coins, antiques, bears, design furniture, stamps and postcards. New this edition are the special collections of classic cars, exhibitions by the National Glassmuseum and demonstrations by Dutch glass artists.

While most people stick to collecting smaller objects, such as dolls or football shirts, there are exceptions. One example of a collection of very large objects is presented at the fair: twenty classic cars from the fifties and sixties. A number of historical British and American cars, such as the famous Austin Healey 3000, a car that participated in many great races in the sixties. Or the sporty Rover P6, that princess Grace of Monaco had a fatal accident with in 1982. In connection with this special collection the Mega Record & CD Fair offers an exhibition of record covers with pictures of classic cars.

Dutch glass design

Glassmuseum Leerdam

The National Glassmuseum presents the exhibition "Cochius' Dream". Petrus Cochius was director of the glass factory in Leerdam at the beginning of the twentieth century. He had drinking services brought on the market, that were not only well designed but above all affordable for the masses. A brave decision in those days, for which he commissioned famous designers, such as Hendrik Berlage and Andreas Copier. Copier designed the classic Gilde glasses in 1930, which are still in production today and in use at all Dutch embassies the world over.

African art

Also new at the Collectors Fair is the exhibition 'One Million Beads' by the National Glassmuseum from Leerdam. It consists of a collection of African art objects (masks, dolls, jewellery and clothes) decorated with colourful glass beads. For some objects more than a million beads have been used.

The well-known Dutch glassblower Johan de Vries exhibits some twenty bowls and plates in different shapes. These colourful dishes have original names, such as 'Lake Sides' and 'Artica'. Artist Tanja de Heus specialises in designing stained glass panels and demonstrates this technique at the fair.
